Our dream in Costa Rica

About Golfo Dulce

With over 600 feet of deep water in the center, the Gulf is home to humpback whales and is a paradise for sport fishermen. The bay separates the Osa Peninsula from the mainland of Costa Rica. Golfo Dulce has many great beaches and an incredible rainforest. Visitors can find up to four species of monkeys, including spider, howler and white-faced As well as poisonous frogs, jaguars and anteaters and a host of other amazing animals and birds. Nowhere else in Costa Rica will you find this kind of diversity of flora and fauna! Also, beautiful birds are abundant. For example, toucans, scarlet macaws, and hummingbirds.

This area of Costa Rica was the center of the pre-Columbian Diquís culture. Rumors of gold found here sent many Spanish explorers searching for hidden gold mines. Gold prospectors passed through the rivers of the Osa Peninsula. Although the gold rush in this region was short-lived. In the 1930s the United Fruit Company (or the banana company) established in this area, building a fancy house for their American managers. Many of which restored their original elegance.

Golfito, the main port on the Gulf, was an important port for the export of bananas for several decades. When United Fruit (or the banana company) closed in the mid-1980s, mainly because of worker discontent and increased export taxes, the area fell economically, but was bolstered by the government's decision to develop in the area of a duty-free zone, African palm oil plantations have replaced many of the old banana plantations, and much more land dedicated to the cultivation of this palm oil. Sport fishing have become a famous tourist attraction in recent years.

Separated from the open Pacific coast by the wild and unspoiled Osa Peninsula, lies the beautiful bay of Golfito. There are frequent trips to cross the Golfo Dulce from Golfito to Puerto Jiménez, which is the entry point for the Osa Peninsula and the remote and exotic Corcovado National Park. The beaches south of Golfito offer incredible surf and are still relatively unknown. The beaches are also some of the most beautiful in the country!

To get to Golfo Dulce, you can use route 27 (coastal highway), and it is 1.5 hours from Uvita, or 4.5 hours from San José. Another way to get there is by plane with a 45-minute flight from San José to Puerto Jiménez.
